The Top 5 Tips for Food Photography

1. Use Natural Lighting.

- Light is the main element of shooting great photos. Use natural light rather than artifical light because color is very important, you want the colors of the food to look accurate.

2. Choose the Best Angles.

- When photographing food, you want to select the best angles for the camera. You want to use angles that give details and create strong composition. Shooting from the top is the best angle to shoot from, because it can easily give details of the food and background, and illustrate the different shapes of the food, plates, and dishes.

3. Think About the Color.

- Color is extremely important in photography because color is what demonstrates the feeling of the photo. You want to use different contrast colors to make the photo feel more interesting and appealing to people's emotions. You can create different color contrast between the background and the food or to make it much easier, use contrasting colors in the food itself.

4. Control the Shadows.

- Shadows are really important because they can make or break an image and also enhance a photo. The intensity of the shadows depends on the type of light you’re shooting in. It's better to shoot photos using softer shadows rather than using strong shadows, even though strong ones can enhance the composition of the photo, because softer shadows are more appealing.

5. Adjust the Exposure.

- Exposure is a reference to the brightness of the photo. You want the exposure to be even and not too dark or too bright. If you're shooting food and other objects in a really white background it can create over-exposure. To avoid this issue, try exposing for the highlights of the photo, meaning set the exposure levels to where it can give detail in the areas that are bright.
